The Common - An Extranet for Educators
Founded in 1992, Edison Schools is the nation’s
leading partner with public schools and school districts,
focused on raising student achievement through its research-based
school design and integrated use of technology.
In 2001, DaveJ.com was hired to redesign
the top levels of Edison's vast extranet system. This innovative
portal, known as The Common, links hundreds of public schools
with teachers, families and students nationwide.
The Common had grown organically since 1995
and included features that ranged from student-designed home
pages to official benchmarking standards for all 50 states.
Additionally, Edison Schools had an established corporate
ID package that was not being utilized on The Common.
DaveJ.com met with the internal departments
of Edison to discover the needs of corporate HQ, teachers,
students and families.
The result was a complete overhaul of the
top levels of The Common, re-establishing the brand on these
pages while allowing the homegrown qualities of the community-based
sections to flourish and grow.
